Hunger is a worldwide issue for thousands of people, adults and children, every day. It turns out that 1 in 4 children are affected by this epidemic just in South Carolina and Georgia alone. Some children go to school and they eat the provided meals every day of the week, but from Friday afternoon until the next Monday morning, they go without food. Meals are all they can keep their mind on at school on Monday, because they have not gotten the complete nutrition needed over the weekend.
The Weekend Backpack Snackpack program’s main goal is to provide healthy boxed meals for these children to take home on the weekends. They have provided over 4,500 children with weekend food throughout South Carolina and Georgia. About 1,000 children in Anderson county are part of this mix. The Golden Harvest Food Bank is the main affiliate of this organization and is located in Augusta, Georgia.
Our YVC group had lots of fun this past Saturday volunteering at the Anderson site, and we packaged 2,592 boxes of food in 2 hours!! We all came away from this volunteer activity feeling very accomplished and we know that we all impacted so many lives of young children in our community. Come on out and support this awesome organization as they continue to change children’s lives every day.
